Children with speech sound disorders are more likely to experience difficulties with phonological awareness (the ability to recognize and manipulate sounds in words) and single-word reading. 📚👂
Why does this matter? Because phonological awareness is one of the strongest early predictors of reading success! When a child struggles to hear or produce certain sounds, it can make it harder for them to match those sounds to letters, a critical step in learning to read.

Last week we had the incredible opportunity to join our friends at JISH in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for therapy sessions focused on incorporating early literacy skills into speech therapy! ✨
Together, we practiced early phoneme-grapheme correspondences using Arabic alongside the Bjorem Speech Sound Cues®, a beautiful blend of language and learning.
A huge thank you to the amazing SLPs at JISH who not only hosted us but jumped into sessions to ensure the therapy was culturally responsive, collaborative, and fun!

When speech impacts clarity, how can we really tell if a child is blending, segmenting, or decoding correctly? That’s where input phonics comes in.
Input phonics allows SLPs to assess and teach critical reading skills without requiring speech output—which is key for students with motor planning or speech sound disorders.
Tasks like identifying initial sounds or matching spoken words to pictures help isolate literacy skills from speech sound errors.

I like to use various cues when working on reading and spelling with King. You can hear his vowel error (long I instead of long o). Instead of just bringing attention to the error or giving him the correct word, King used his strategies to say the word correctly. Bringing attention to the error won’t automatically make the student say the word correctly-you have to teach and use strategies!

Yesterday we spent the morning determining what sound symbol correspondences Hunt knew. Our session was a happy mix of receptive and expressive tasks. There was no obligation to say the sounds. Instead, I would say them and he would identify the grapheme that went with that sound.

Having this data and assessing with input phonics paints a clearer picture of skills for an IEP meeting!

When we teach kids suffixes, it’s important to not only teach the pronunciation, the spelling, and the meaning, but kids often require a keyword and it’s so important to teach the part of speech as well! I loved her idea of putting sticky notes behind the card to give students the appropriate scaffolding if they cannot recall all parts of the suffix during your visual drill.
